Digital Editions 2.0.1 crashes in Windows 8

I have run Digital Editions 1.7.2 for a couple of years, easily accessible from my PAID Acrobat Pro, on several PAID publications.

I am running Windows 8 on a Lenovo Thinkpad Carbon X1 Touch under Windows 8 Pro x64.  I have tried using the updated version 2.1.  It seems to install fine, but it crashes every time I start it.  I had the same problem on my previous Lenovo Yoga 13 under Windows 8 Pro.  I see several similar complaints in a Google search.

What's happening with the updates?  Does Adobe recognize this problem??  This is supposed to include security updates to 1.7 ....  I purchased books tied to ADE.

P.S.

I got a call from ADE Support:  They admit this problem in Windows 8 and are working on a fix for the next version.

I have been contacted by Support over half a dozen times, asking me to call back.  Each time I call back, the support person starts from scratch only to verify that indeed 2.0.1 fails on Windows 8.  I finally had to cancel the support ticket just to stop them sending me silly emails to call them back.

As of today, 11 Oct 2013, ADE is still at version 2.0.,1, the version that fails on Windows 8.

If you have Windoiws 8, Support advises using 1.7.2.  I advise doing nothing with ADE until they fix a new version 2, since they clain that 2.0.1 has important Level 3 security fixes.  This renders my paid-for epub books useless to me since I will not use a risky ADE product.

I am now having trouble using it on Windows Vista.  I always get an error message when I try to download a book from the Denver Public Library.  Never had the problem in the past.  Now I can't even read the books or transfer them to my Nook.  What a pain.  I don't buy books from any of the vendors.  I don't buy books except those at Barnes and Noble specifically for Nook.  Error:  E_ADEPT_EQUEST_EXPIRED http//deactive. adobe.com.

madstitcher54: Request expired can happen if the computer or eReader has been set to the wrong time or wrong timezone.

Lester Ingber: I don't think 1.7.2 is a significant security risk.  If you prefer you could try Sony Reader.

Free download from Sony intended to run with Sony eReaders but works quite happily without.  I prefer ADE1.7.2 to Sony Reader. https://ebookstore.sony.com/download/
