Digital Editions authorization fails. Unsupported product so Adobe won't help online.

Now that ADE is unsupported, a situation that probably has caught many of us by surprise, one can't authorize new systems and systems that ran a few weeks ago, now don't. Does anyone have a working solution? I tried ADE 3.0, 4.0 and several 4.5 versions. All fail with the same error of not finding the authenticaton server. Could there be issues with the recent 2FA activation or with password complexity? Is there another windows application that does what ADE used to do very well?
