digital editions reader frozen

Can anyone tell me how to get Adobe Digital Editions reader to actually work? I have downloaded it, the book is there, and it opens at a random page and jsut sits there. Clicking on the contents page or the page arrows makes no difference. The adobe web help is dire, so I googled for info and saw the suggestion to uninstall and reinstall in another folder, which i have done. This has not helped. I'm on Windows 7 - is that the problem? The download page does not differentiate versions of Windows
