"Error! Check Activation" ADE 3.0

I finally dumped my 15-year old XP computer and got a W8. Used Laplink to move software and data from old to new computer. Upgraded from ADE 2.0 to 3.0. Got the error message when I tried to read a book (even tried Adobe's samples). I also tried reverting to ADE 2.0 and that didn't help.
