Error when uploading ebook

I have adobe digital editions 4.5. I am trying to upload/read an e-textbook for my class but whenever I click the link to do so I get an error message. 
"E_ADEPT_DOCUMENT_TYPE_UNKNOWN:" 

Does this have to do with the publisher or adobe? Can someone please help.
