Getting message when downloading a book: E_STREAM_ ERROR

I have downloaded ebooks successfully from my library for years using Adobe Digital Editions.   Suddenly, however, I get this message:  Unable to download.  Error getting license.  License server communication problem..E_STREAM_ERROR.

At the suggestion of tech support at the library, I erased the authorization and then authorized the computer anew.  This didn't help.  Rebooting the computer after doing this reauthorization didn't help either.  I checked my firewall settings and Adobe Digital Editions is listed as "allow."  Anyone have a similar problem.   I fear this has something to do with a recent mandatory Windows update.  (I have 8.1.)  Everything worked before the update; now it doesn't.

    I have the same problems on Mac Yosemite: the message is almost the same, except that it ends with: E_ACT_NOT_READY. I did more or less the same maneuvers with no results.Everything worked before the update; now it doesn't.
