How can I get Adobe Digital Editions to recognize my Nook HD?

I have switched from a Sony to a Nook HD. When I try to access books from my library ad Adobe Digital Editions it does not recognize my Nook HD, even when it is attached to my computer and turned on. I do not get a message to authorize it when I attach it to my computer. What can I do?
