How can I read ebooks on my office pc and read the same book on my laptop later?

How can I read ebooks on my office pc and read the same book on my laptop later? My office computer runs windows8.1 and my laptop runs vista. I tried to download the same book from my local library to both pcs but overdrive did not allow me.
