How do I get Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) to authorize?

I keep getting "E_AUTH_NOT_READY" when I enter login info and click on "Authorize".  Also, a "Quicken 2013 The Official Guide" book that was working OK in ADE2 now needs authorization and it won't open in the Adobe Reader XI (It's a big PDF). Do I need to reload ADE2 and dump ADE4?  Getting most recent updates is causing problems.
