How do I transfer a book loaded via ADE to my e-reader?

When I download the book and try to transfer, I receive the error message: "You can only authorize this computer with an Adobe ID that hasn't been previously used to authorize any other computer or mobile device. Please try again."

No suggestion is offered for how to get around this issue.
