How to restore highlights and notes?

I recently closed the Adobe Digital Editions program, and none of my highlights and notes are now appearing when I go back to read my books. How do I make them reappear? I know there is an annotation file saved under "My Documents," but when I double click on it, I get a message that Windows cannot open the file. Help! Thanks!
