I am unable to open newly purchased ebooks with Digital Editions. Windows XP, SP2, firewall and anti-virus turned off. Not behind any firewall.

Adobe DRM Error
System: 7
State: 4
Class: 5
Code: 31
Message: Your Adobe software could not be activated. HTTP error on Adobe DRM Activator request. Adobe DRM Activator error (client code 31; HTTP code 555).
Fault location: 5

What are my alternatives? I am unable to open these books in Adobe Reader 7.0 or (of course) 8.1.

I have the same error that has been outstanding on this product for more than a year,

    Adobe DRM Error
    System:  9
    State:  4
    Class:  20
    Code:  31
    Message:

Your Adobe software could not be activated.

The solutions range from fixing your firewall, which is done to re-downloading your ebooks. Now since as many other have discover any ebooks that you have purchased and being using on old adobe ebook readers from places like amazon.com, boarders or ebooks.com who do not hold copies for you to re-download (older than 1-2 years back) and any backup (which should be possible) will not actually work with Adobe's Digital Edition even if you have registered everything correctly.

I pretty much consider that i have lost my entire ebook library as even through I have legally purchased them and registered them to my account. A failure of my harddrive and having to rebuild it has left me unable to restore me ebooks from backups.

Rather than complain and bang on about adobe's failure to comply to consumer rights with their product and that the fact this bug has been outstanding for more than a year with no resolution. This pretty much vindicates ElcomSoft point that users should have the right to be able to remove DRM for legally purchase ebooks for backup purposes.

I am going to jump ship and look at microsofts reader or move to Barnes & nobles software (at least I know I will have access to my ebooks for life and can use it on my ipod)

There is no point hacking this product as you will just give Adobe some purchase to feel they have a moral upper hand. My suggestion is to move away from adobe products you will find replacements for all of their stuff: Flash, shockwave and even this useless software.

So take my advice dump adobe they really have produced a useless piece of software here. Just let it be relegated to the scrape heap.

For more than a year I have been experiencing problems with repeated Adobe Digital Reader activation requirements on the same laptop PC.  This is presumably a known problem with Windows XP, but Adobe refuses to either fix it, or provide a quick work-around response such as resetting your activation count.  I have repeatedly lost all access to hundreds of dollars in e-books that I purchased on-line, and this company makes it extremely difficult to even request support, let alone get any real-time response.  I, for one, am looking forward to moving to a Sony Digital Reader where I can get my books in E-Pub format.  DRM sucks big-time!

I just have wasted the whole afternoon for the same reason as everyone else above  (Adobe DRM activator error...).

I have Adobe Standard 6.0 and I have ASME standards that I have saved on the server. And I can not open any of these documents.

I tried to talk to Technical Support: just got frustrated as usually when you talk to people from India. They ask you a tons of irrelevant questions and than transfer you to someone else. It seems they only need your personal information so they can invoice Adobe for their "work". The best is how they end a converstion: after doing nothing but wasting your time, they ask "Is there ANYTHING ELSE I can help you with today?"

hello can you help me with the same issue as well:

"User's signature is invalid. PLease Reactivate.
Adobe DRM Activator error (server code 9.
    Fault location:7
    Contact Customer Support."

When going to the Adobe DRM Activator site :

Here's the problem and how to solve it:

You have tried to open an Digital Edition that was downloaded to another computer. You can open such a document on two computers onl
y when you have activated Adobe Reader or Acrobat on both computers using the same Microsoft .NET Passport or Adobe ID.

Problem: This computer and the computer to which the document was downloaded were activated using different .NET Passports or Adobe
    IDs.

Solution: Return to the retailer, library, or other location where you acquired the document and obtain permission to open it on this computer."

In Windows XP: E_ADEPT_IO ActivationService Info Error%20#2032 this error can be rectified by adding the Adobe Digital Editions program to the exceptions list in the XP firewall. (Go to Control Panel, Windows Firewall, Exceptions, Add Program).

    It is actually Easy....

According to my library (Sacramento) help page...You can only download & read the book on 1 computer using versions 7 or 8. (FYI, You need Acrobat Reader 6 to transfer files to other pcs or palms...)

In (Adobe Acrobat) Reader (menu) I clicked:
    -Advanced
    -ebook services web
    -ARM Activation

It took me to Adobe's web-site...I created an account..It activated my ARM

Then within minutes, the books I downlaoaded 10 minutes earlier started opening up. (I had bookshelf open though).

Hope that Helps New People looking for a solution or the original chic if she checks back! (I found this site 1 year after the original post) God Bless You All!

Actually there was a 4 hour period where the activation server was taken offline yesterday. It went back up around 4:00 pm PST. That's what caused this error..
