I cannot download e-books to ADE

I used to be able to download books to ADE & then to my Nook from my library. Now when I try to a message comes up "Adobe Reader could not open (title of book) becasue it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an e-mail attachment & was not correctly decoded.  I have Windows 8
