If I returned books why are they still on my bookshelf?

I returned books this morning, but Adobe Digital Editions stopped responding several times during the process.  I opened my Library account and the books are still on my bookshelf.  I just returned two more books, and they are still on my bookshelf as well.  What do I need to do to get Adobe working again?
