Is there a way to transfer an e-book from my laptop to the Adobe Digital Editions app on my iPad?

I want to transfer my world history textbook to my iPad that I use for school, but I plug my iPad into my laptop and when I go into the Adobe Digital Editions on my laptop, my iPad does not show up. Is there a way to transfer it, or will I just have to use it on my laptop?
