issues with screen reading software (JAWS & NVDA) ADE v3.0

Can anyone solve this problem?

I need to have a book read aloud to someone with reading issues and had hoped to use JAWS or NVDA or in fact any other free or cheap screen reading software. I have tried both and text aloud and none of them would read the actual text of the book.

Searching the internet has yielded little in the way of useful help.
