kindle not detected by ADE

I bought my Kindle from a reputable UK retailer and its fully registered, so is my ADE but when I plug the Kindle in and turn the ADE on it doesn't detect the Kindle so I can't transfer the EPUBS I've downloaded from my PC to the Kindle... Any thoughts or suggestions?

    What model of Kindle?  Generally Kindles do not read epubs, only Amazon's own format .awz and mobi.

    Google may help if it is a "Fire".
