kobo e-reader not been functioning properly

I have been using Adobe digital editions for years to put and manage e-books on my (kobo) e-reader. This adobe is on my desktop PC and I connect my e-book with a cable.

For some time now, it has not been functioning properly. For example, starting up and especially uploading a saved book takes forever (really minutes).

What could be the problem?
