lost notes and highlights in adobe digital editions

Some time since before the last update of Adobe digital editons update all of my notes and highlights for the ebooks I am sudying have been lost.  How can I recover them?  Perhaps of significance,  the books appear twice in my library now too.  One instance  indicates it is unread the other shows a tracking bar with about the correct percent completion for where I last left off.  Regardless of which I open I am at the title page with no notes or highlights.
