Printing permission cancelled after transfer to new computer

I had to transfer my library to a different computer shortly after purchasing some books for which I had the right to print them exactly once. I activated ADE, transferred the files and although I had not printed any of the material I cannot do so now.

Is there any way to re-activate the original permission or did I make a mistake when transferring?

For consumable permissions (ie the right to print n times), the initial machine that you fulfill the content on will have the initial count for the permission.  If there is no recurring portion (ie print n times per day), then no other computers will be able to use that permission.  So yes since the permission appeared to only have an initial count, you will only have been able to print them on your first computer.

Right, thanks. Is there any solution to this problem or is it a case of "tough luck, buddy", as the first computer has since been cleaned out by our IT department?

There is no technical solution, as this is behaving correctly (albeit annoying to you).  You could of course contact the place where you purchased the books from, and see if they will let you redownload the content.
