Reading Text?

Phew... legally blind here. I want to use Digital Editions to read text from books.  It just doesn't seem to work.

When I click in and highlight text, the highlighting all turns very black, the words are not at all readable, and the screen reader does not work on the highlighted text.

HELP?   Please.
