Sony Reader - Adobe Digital Editions DRMed books causing crashes

Hi,

Hopefully someone has seen this behaviour before and knows how to solve it.

I'm in the UK with the UK version of the Sony PRS-505 eBook Reader which runs software version 1.2.00.18050. I've installed the Sony eBook Library and the Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) software on Windows XP and they both worked perfectly. The 'free' books that came with the Reader install just fine as do free books from places like feedbooks.com.

However, when I want to buy a book, things go badly wrong. ADE sees the Reader and I can register it. I then tried to download a book from the Waterstones online store (Waterstones are the UK partner for Sony). The file transferred and looks fine inside ADE.

However, when I copied the file to the Reader's internal memory and unplugged it from the computer, things began to go wrong. The spinning refresh icon appeared and the Reader reset, rebooted, up came the refresh icon, reset, reboot - and so on and on and on...

I performed a hard reset on the Reader, re-registered it with ADE and tried installing the DRMed book on the SD card. After unplugging the Reader, it began to endlessly reboot just as before. Removing the card stopped the rebooting and the Reader behaved as normal. Delete the book from the card, plug it back in and the Reader is happy - so it's definitely something to do with the book or the DRM on the book. I've tried a couple of titles and each of them do the same thing.

After pleading for help on a mobileread forum, another UK user has had exactly the same problem. He has had his Reader exchanged for another one but that too is crashing when he tries to use DRMed content.

So has anyone here seen this problem? I'm completely stuck as Waterstones, from whom I've bought it are passing the buck to Sony and they are almost certainly going to pass it on to Adobe.

Any help would be HUGELY appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike.

    Top Banana !!

Reader now working fine after de-authorising and then authorising it again.

Many thanks for your help I was ready to give up on the Sony e-reader and send it back for a refund.

    Ted,
Unfortunately there is no good way to tell the AdobeID that a Sony Reader was registered to. So the best alternative I can come up with, is to Deauthorize your Reader in ADE (again this is seperate and distinct from the Sony store registration) by pressing "Ctrl+Shift+E" with the Sony Reader plugged in. This will remove any Adobe Authorization from the Sony Reader and should immediately ask you to reauthorize the Sony Reader. If it does not do so, with ADE still active, unplug and replug your Sony Reader from the PC should force the Device Activation dialog to come up.

If this doesn't work you best bet will be to open up a tech support case.

    Hi Jim,

How can I tell what Adobe ID the reader is authorised with and can this be re-set if there is an error ?

When I registered with Adobe Digital editions this is shown in the Adobe Digital Editions when I click on the Library and select authorise computer as this shows my e-mail address.

I have tried a hard re-set on the reader and this has made no difference.

Presumably there must be a away of re-setting the Reader and starting again ?

    Ted,
The Sony Reader must be authorized with the same AdobeID as Digital Editions. If you are using Windows, ADE should have asked you about this when you first plugged in your Reader.
If you are using a Macintosh, unfortunately you will need to first Authorize your Sony Reader on a Windows machine.

I seem to be having a similar problem. I purchased a Sony PRS-505 from the Waterstones online store and purchased an e-book but it will not transfer onto the reader.

I have no problem with downloaded free e-books or with the free books that came with my reader.

I can open the downloaded book on ADE or in the e-book library on my PC but when I try to load it on the reader it says I do not have permission to copy the document when I try to drag & drop the book.

The Sony helpline say it might be the e-bbok itself or an issue with ADE. I am getting the run around between Waterstones, Son. As for the ADE helpline I have given up after spending 20 minutes on the call centre queues.

I have looked for later software but my version seems to be the latest. I have tried the hard reset on the reader and deleting and re-installing the software.

Where do I go from here - begining to wish I had never bought the dam thing !!

Can anyone advise me what I need to do with my new Sony PRS-505 please?

    WARNING MESSAGE:
THIS EBOOK CANNOT BE TRANSFERRED BECAUSE IT IS AUTHORISED TO ANOTHER USER.

I have tried removing the EBook library and getting the reader back to Restore Defaults.

I am the only user of this reader and I have only used one email address in Adobe Digital.

I'm currently suffering from diplopia and bought the reader to help with my reading by enlarging the font, so any simple remedies would be appreciated!

    Thank you,

Bob... you've got to contact Sony on this one. Engineering has confirmed this entirely on the Sony side. It's certainly possible that some of the batch of bad readers made it to the US.

    Bentley:
Did you hear anything further? I'm still routinely getting my US Reader blown up when I add/delete digital editions with ADE. I just deleted two protected PDF's and added a new one. The Reader crashed, rebooted then took about 15 minutes for the spinning arrows to finish.

Once it cleared up I used the Sony eBook Library software to just move the new book to a collection on the Reader. It took another 15 minutes to recover from that after disconnecting the Reader.

I've got zero problems transferring / accessing unprotected files or protected content purchased from Sony.

I've already given up using the memory card hoping that would help, but that fix seems to be less than I'd hoped for.

Also I'm seeing some peculiar behavior with the in-built "delete" function. If I use it to delete a protected book directly from the Reader, it disappears from the Reader book list, but still shows up as on the Reader when I connect to ADE.

    Thanks,
    Bob
