Strange Characters in text

I have downloaded the following book from ebooks.com - The Luminaries by Elenor Catton. Every now and again, usually when quotes are used, I get strange symbols in the text. Don't know how to type them. One is an 'a' with a circumflex. The other may be the Euro symbol. Any idea of how to get rid of these?
