Trying to access my adobe digital edition docs

I downloaded digital editions on a new pc, but it won't allow me to open any of my old docs, nor will it allow me to authorise my new version.  Isn't it supposed to be possible to download  it onto more than one pc or reader and use the same id number to register multiple versions of digital editions?  How do I solve this problem?
