Unable to get license to download ebooks

I'm using Windows 8 on a laptop.  The following error message appears on my screen when I try to download an ebook:

Unable to download

Error getting License. License Server Communication Problem: E_ADEPT_DOCUMENT_TYPE_UNKOWN:

I already have a valid Adobe ID, but this doesn't seem to help.  Thanks!
