when I open adobe digital edition my ereader is no longer recognized?

Ereader isn't being recognized in digital editions.  It's a kobo ereader and when I open kobo on my desktop it also no longer recognizes my ereader?  To add insult to injury my ereader no longer has any content.  It still appears to function properly but I have no books and can't load anything new.  Any suggestions out there???
