Why can I not read anything on my desktop?

I have bought 3 digital books now, one from Kobe, others elsewhere, on my University desktop.

But I cannot read any of them!

they say "Errors were encountered in opening the file"

Surely these are not all scams?

Could my University server be sabotaging the process?
