Why does ADE crash on MacBook when opening epub in ADE and sync to Kobo?

I am able to successfully download an ePub from my local library using Overdrive and the file shows up in ADE and on my computer Finder. I am able to read the book using browser, but when I try and open the book in ADE or sync to my Kobo, it crashes.  Very frustrating! Please help:)
