Unable to Edit Text

Hi. I opened an existing file with a text object that said "Carpet". I can't edit the type at all. The area that would have options to change the word, and other text based tools are gone. 

I also opened a new file to test the text tool. When I used the text tool, again I had no way to edit the default "Lorem.." copy. 

Nothing works. Please help.
