ADE crashing

I installed ADE.  When I open it, as soon as I select anything it crashes and closes.  For example I haven't yet authorized my computer because as soon as I select Help on the tool bar it gives me an error message and shuts down.  I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling multiple times and it still is giving me the same error and crashing.  Help!

I am using Windows XP.  I have Firefox.  I am wanting to use this so that I can load ebooks onto my Nook simple touch...anythingelse that you need to know?

    What error message does it give?

    Does your computer meet all the requirements? http://www.adobe.com/products/digital-editions/tech-specs.html

    Does the same thing occur when working in a selective startup? http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/disable-startup-items-services-windows.html

    Sorry for not replying sooner- I had to rescue your message from my spam folder.

    I'm pretty sure my computer meets all the requirements.  I have installed, uninstalled, and re-installed this multiple times- yes, I have shut down and restarted the computer several times.  But I still get the same problem.  At least it's consistent.
