What does AAM do when updating adobe apps does upgrade to a completely new version of software or does it update the current version?

hi,

the answer depends.

with the cc desktop app from here, https://creative.adobe.com/products/creative-cloud:

for minor version changes (ie, updates): it updates your current version with the latest update (ie, same major version) with no option to keep the previous version, too. 

for major version changes (ie, upgrades): the previous version will be removed and new version installed unless you select the option to keep the previous version (by clicking advanced settings during the upgrade).
