Adobe License Transfer

I have a brief question about the License Transfer process for legacy products.

When I was in school I purchased CS4 Production premium that I happily used until I got a new computer and the activation servers were shut down. After scouring eBay for awhile I found a legitimate CS5 Design Standard upgrade (whose servers still worked). At the time I did not know anything about filling out a license transfer application, I was used to manually deactivating the license in the program before installing it in a new machine.

However, looking at my Adobe account now, I do have CS5 design Standard and Acrobat 9 associated with my Adobe account and the software is running fine on my machine. Perhaps the original owner never linked the key with an adobe account? In any case does that mean that my license is all set to go?

@Siskiyou Alex thank you for posting. It is quite remarkable you were able to find an unregistered copy of Creative Suite 5 in 2026. I do see the software registered to your account.

You may want to still complete the steps listed at https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/transfer-product-license.html with the seller since you just made the purchase.

Creative Suite 5 used an automatic process for software registration, so you may also want to bookmark https://helpx.adobe.com/download-install/apps/licensing-activation/serial-number-redemption-code/invalid-revoked-serial-numbers.html in case the license gets invalidated by our fraud team. You may also want to check with the seller regarding their refund process if the serial number registered today ends up being invalidated in the future.

I’m curious why you would throw money at unrusted eBay sellers for unsupported apps that’re obsolete and potentially infected with malware. The risks far outweigh any rewards, IMO.

A 3-year license to the latest Photoshop Elements is affordably priced and fully supported by Adobe.

A reasonable question. To be sure it was very difficult to weed through the eBay sellers who appeared to be selling cracked copies of the software and find one that looked legit and even then it is a risk.

For me, it boiled down to me learning on photoshop and being comfortable with it coupled with the infrequency of my use not justifying the price of an annual subscription to the full photoshop program (though I am intrigued by its new features). All said, I don’t think I would recommend it for most people or even myself if I were to do it again, eBay is rife with fraudulent software

Thank you for the reply. I actually purchased the CS5 upgrade a couple of years ago but only linked it with my adobe account today. Previously I used the in-app activation which worked for upgrading my CS4. To be honest I did not know that you could register it online until today.

It was hard finding a real copy, most of the ones on the market are fakes.
it looks like the license transfer from works so that the software can be associated with a different adobe account. Since it is successfully linked to mine I hope I’m good. 🤞🏼

as long as you don’t change any hardware on the installed computer and don’t try to install it in another computer, you’re probably ok.
