App doesn't update correctly

Hello everyone!

Like others, I encountered error 146 once I tried to update a couple apps including Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects. I searched for solutions and tried following the advice of uninstalling Creative Cloud and then reinstalling. Now Premiere Pro can't install at all, but the weird thing is I can find the file for the 2018 version in my Finder and I can open it just fine, but for some reason it won't show up on the Creative Cloud Desktop. I have tried it out, it works perfectly fine, but Creative Cloud doesn't seem to think so. Any ideas why Creative Cloud won't register it as installed, even though I have it in my Applications folder and can open it just fine?

As I said, it works fine, but I am just curious what might cause Creative Cloud to glitch out on me.

PS. Because I am working on a computer that runs a different language than English, it is difficult for me to just rename a folder if it has to go ind a start directory called 'System/Library'. Trust me, I have looked for the folders, they don't exist on my computer.

Thanks in advance!

So I managed to find a possible solution:

     - if the error message is showing and the uninstall button isn't showing, log out from the CC desktop app and then re-login;

     - click uninstall from the drop down menu of the apps you want to be deleted;

     - after the apps are uninstalled, delete all the content in the system cache folder (for mac os open the finder and press command + shift + G, on the window that appear type " /tmp " without the quotation marks);

     - click "Install" button on the apps

It might take some time to download depending on your internet connection but I managed to install Premiere Pro and After Effects with the latest version without problems.

The cause of this error might be a conflict between the old version and the new version of the same application, so deleting the old one might fix this problem.

If this doesn't work for you, maybe deleting the content of the cache folder didn't do nothing, instead try the Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool, it removes all the user preferences of the apps you want to be deleted so that you can make a clean installation without conflicts

Use the Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems

I hope I managed to solve your problem.

Cheers

I should also add that any installed plug-ins could bring up this issue. For example I use Duik from Rainbox in my After Effects (a free open source character rigging plug-in).

I know, it's a bummer to always do this process because of a plug-in that every time you have to reinstall, but looks like there is nothing else you can do.

You might try removing your plug-ins before updating, but I think it's convenient to just follow the software uninstalling and re-installing process of all the stuff.

It's not that they don't exists, they're hidden from your sight, because those folders are system folders and to prevent users from deleting one of those folders by mistake they are simply hidden from you.

To be able to view them, if you are on windows OS just go to the view tab and to the far right should be a box named "show hidden files" or something like that; if you are on Mac OS instead open the finder and press command + shift + . (dot).

Unfortunately I have the same problem like you on a Macbook pro: Pp and Ae won't update because Adobe CC is unable to move a hidden folder (.adobeTemp) to another in order to update. I still have to try to update on my windows laptop on my account (the one on the Macbook it's not mine), but on the macbook I tried to delete an adobe temporary folder and the whole temp folder of the system with no positive results, CC still fail to update.

The error that I have is 146 like yours, this is what appeared when I opened the log file for Premiere Pro:

Exit Code: 146

-------------------------------------- Summary --------------------------------------

- 2 fatal error(s), 0 error(s), 1 warnings(s)

FATAL: Error (Code = 146) executing in command 'MoveDirectoryCommand' for package: 'AdobePremierePro12AllTrial', version:12.0.1.69

FATAL: Error occurred in install of package (Name: AdobePremierePro12AllTrial Version: 12.0.1.69). Error code: '146'

WARN: Failed to move directory '/.adobeTemp/68199722-8456-47C9-A70B-4DDC98CFA974/1/universal/App' to '/System/Library/Components/PDFImporter.component/Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2018'

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The same stuff appeared for After Effects.

I just hope someone comes in to solve this problem.

EDIT: actually there is a web page coming from Adobe where it explain somethings to try in order to resolve this error.

Resolve Error Code 146 or 147 encountered while installing Adobe Creative Cloud desktop apps.

I still have to try it, but I'll post a new answer in case I'll come to a fix.

Just FYI, the link you shared to the "Resolve Error Code 146..." is to an article from 2016 and does not resolve the current round of problems.
