Can't install CS6 on external drive

I don't have space on my main drive for all of the CS6 apps I need. I tried moving the apps to a external drive but the app manger can't update the files and says I need to reinstall. I tried updating the path. Duing the intial install there is no choice to put the apps on an external drive that I can see. Very very frustrated.
