Can't install updates to Lightroom 6.0 Standalone (not CC)

I purchased Lightroom 6.0 for windows standalone product and installed it successfully with the DVD. I've been trying to install the update for the current version 6.10.1/2015.10.1 from the download on the Adobe site but the patch installer fails to initialize and the update doesn't install. Also when I try to see the available updates in the "Help" window in Lightroom the title bar blinks but nothing happens. I then uninstalled Lightroom and downloaded the the version 6 that is available for download on the Adobe site. It installed correctly but it still doesn't respond to the "Updates" selection on the top menu in Lightroom. I went ahead and re-downloaded and tried to install the update again and still - no response when I tried to run the patch installer. I'm running Windows 10 64bit. I've never had so much trouble updating software before.

    I Tried this all, including uninstall and reinstall, and it is still not working.

    I'm going through this rigamarole because LR will no longer recognize or import raw .NEF files (it was working just fine and now not!

    The current update to 6.10.1 fails every time.  When I re-install, it does not install at the 6.10 level!

    Here is my current version (This is after uninstall and re-install):

    Operating system: Windows 8.1 Home Premium Edition

    I'm trying to update the STANDALONE version - not CC. I don't even get a message when trying to run the patch installer. It doesn't initialize at all.

    what message are you seeing after downloading the update and trying to install it?

    if it's 'installer failed to initialize', start at the top and work your way down applying applicable fixes until your problem is resolved.

    if cc (win):  https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/creative-cloud-desktop-application-failed.html

    if osx 10.12 (sierra), https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/install-creative-suite-mac-os-sierra.html

    if, your error is:

    "Installer failed to initialize. File not found." or "Installer failed to initialize. This could be due to missing files."

    first, rename OOBE Folder to OOBE.old.

    to find OOBE:

    64 bit win OS: Program Files x86\Common Files\Adobe\OOBE

    32 bit win OS: Program Files \Common Files\Adobe\OOBE

    mac os: HD>library>application support>adobe>caps

    mac os: USER>library>application support>adobe>OOB

    if that fails or isn't the exact error you see, uninstall, clean (http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cscleanertool.html) and reinstall.

    if you're using a dvd to install:

    copy the disc contents to a desktop directory and install from that directory.

    if you're using a mac:

    1. Try to Create a new user account in Mac with Administrator Priviledges.

    2. Login to the New user, Navigate to Mac HD> Application> Utilities> Adobe Installer folder, Locate products like Adobe Reader, Adobe Flash, Adobe Air and un-install them

    3. Navigate to User Library> Application Support> Adobe and move Adobe to Trash.

    4. Navigate to Mac HD> Library> Application Support> Adobe and move Adobe to Trash.

    5. Start the installation again.
