Can't open PDF files

I had a trial of Adobe XI. After my trial I purchased the product because I could no longer open PDF files. I have registered my product and downloaded Adobe reader. I have also tried to use the on line chat but it never works, it is non responsive. I cannot open ANY PDF files, every time I try to it tells me my trial has ended. I bought the product in October. Anybody help?

    Did you enter your serial number to activate the product?

    To change the default PDF handler (from Acrobat to Reader) open Adobe Reader | Edit | Preferences | General.
