Cannot install CS4 on WinXP

I already have photoshop CS4 installed on one WinXP (Home) PC, but now I tried

to install a second copy on a recently-acquired second WinXP (Pro) PC via my

Photoshop CD.  The first time I tried this, everything seemed OK for a

while.  I entered my serial number, and the CS4 installer seemed happy

with that, but eventually, the installer froze.  Judging by the green

installation-progress bar, this happened about 1/16 of the way through

the installation process.  After about 1/2 hour, I killed the installer

via the task manager (attempts to kill it in other ways had previously

failed).  Several more tries with the installer each resulted in the

installer quickly terminating with a cryptic "Thanks" message.  I tried

removing CS4 via the control panel.  This apparently worked, but

re-installation still did not work.  Finally, I actually backed the

system up to a restore point before my initial attempt, but now the CS4

installer simply freezes about 80% of the way through "checking system

profile."  Can anyone help with this?
