cannot open images up in newly upgraded cs5, just get thumbail in layers palette

I cannot open images up in newly upgraded version of cs5, I just get a thumbnail in the layers palette and a blank window over the workspace with the image number in the lefthand corner, if I click and drag on the ref.number the image appears but then disappears when the mouse button is released, any ideas?????
