Changing part of a path

Basic question but I'm stuck!  I've created a line using the pen tool - this line has several anchor points along it.  I want to edit line thickness/style on sections of the line, between anchor points.  I thought I could just select 2 anchor points and edit the line section between them but instead the entire line along

all the anchor points is altered.  What am I doing wrong?
