Changing the email address in my Adobe ID

My current Adobe ID uses an old, inactive email address.  I would like to remove that old email address and instead use the alternate email address on my account.  When I try this, I get an error saying that email address is in use.  When I instead try to log in to the account using that email address, I get another error telling me it has been deactivated.  Have tried online chat but no help.
