I have had a subscript to creative cloud photography plan but recently purchased a copy of Lightroom with a view to stopping the creative cloud subscription. I am now getting countdown messages to the expiry of my subscription which I do not intend continuing. Can I let this countdown continue and allow the subscription to expire without affecting my news Lightroom installation and its operation.

you may need to uninstall, clean and then reinstall your licensed lightroom after your trial expires.
or, you can do that now to remove the subscription info from your computer:
uninstall everything cc including preferences and including lightroom, https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/help/uninstall-remove-app.html
then uninstall the cc desktop app, https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/help/uninstall-creative-cloud-desktop-app.html
clean your computer of cc files per http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cscleanertool.html
restart your computer (don't skip this)
reinstall your lightroom.
