Will CS 3, specifically InDesign, work on iMAC Sierra 10.12? Are there issues related to trying this? Many thanks for your help.

Even if it will install, you won't be able to activate

The CS2-CS3-CS4 activation servers have been removed from service
-https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite.html?promoid=19SCDRQK
-So even if you have a disc or saved download, CS2-CS3-CS4 are completely dead
-Adobe also no longer supplies the special non-activation version of CS2-CS3-CS4

Thank you for your very clear guidance and an accurate picture of what Adobe has chosen as their path forward. I can only predict that users will search elsewhere for comparable products that will be supported.

Operating system advances sometimes-to-often mean that old programs will not work

This is very common with Apple's new operating systems not maintaining backward compatibility

With Windows 11 Microsoft has now done the same thing, at least for "one" program

My wife uses an old, non-subscription version of Quicken checking on Windows 10

I have a spare computer built from extra parts, which I upgraded to Windows 11

Her non-subscription Quicken won't run on Windows 11

I have installed very few programs on that spare, so there may be other programs that won't run

No it's not officially supported and most probably won't even install. See the following link for the system requirements for CS3

However you may try the workrounds given at the following links and see if you are in luck

Thank you for responding to my question. It's difficult for me as a long time Adobe user, over 40 years, to accept the direction the company is taking and to not provide the support users need. Too bad.
