I had to re-install OSX Lion 3 times to fix performance problems, and then restore all Applications and Data from backup

After restoring CS4 I get "Error 6" on startup

Any ideas?

This would be expected.  I would recommend trying to remove the software using the uninstaller located in the Applications/Utilities/Adobe Installers folder.  Once done then you can try running the install from your installation media.  If you continue to have difficulties then I would recommend running CS5 Cleaner tool.  You can find details for running this at CS5 Cleaner Tool for installation problems | CS5.5, CS5, CS4, CS3 - http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/cs5-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html.

In the future I would recommend only restoring your documents and settings and then reinstalling your applications from the installation media.

Also normally in these circumstances I would recommend formatting and reinstalling your OS again but it sounds like you have already had to do that several times so try the uninstall of the application route first.
