I have a new computer.  Indesign 5.5 is installed on my old computer.  I have serial numbers, etc., but do not know how to install the program on my new computer.

You do not necessarily need to deal with deactivating the software on your old machine because you are allowed to have the software installed on two machines.  But it can be helpful to deactivate if you no longer plan to use that machine anymore so that you have a second activation available if you need one.

As far as your serial number problem goes, you'll need to head to Adobe Support directly to resolve that.  I do not know if that involves the same chat service you called "Customer service".

Run Help --> Deactivate on the old machine, download the installer from here onto ther new machine:

Direct Download Links for Adobe Software

Then simply run it like you did the first time.

Thanks for the suggestion, but what is "deactivate?" Customer service chat

walked me through the download process but never told me to "deactivate"

first. What's the matter with these people? How about first things firs?

I did the download but can't open it because my serial number is

ineffective or inappropriate with no explanation as to what to do about it.

I hate to spend my otherwise productive time in utter futility.
