how do you download a trial of Illustrator in a former version?

I signed up for a free version of Illustrator only to find out that I could not download it because it was incompatible with my MAC version of OS. I have Sierra 12. Am I to understand that free versions are only available in the most recent upgrade?

    You don't.  Only PAID members have access to the previous version.  You need High Sierra or higher.
