I have recently been forced to upgrade to 10.10 and unfortunately cs3 needs reinstalling.

I have the disks and when I install via the set-up assistant it cannot install and says in red it can't.

What can I do?

Thank you.

I am afraid that CS3 will not be compatible with 10.10, please check System requirements | Photoshop

I ran Photoshop CS3 and Illustrator CS3 and CS5. for several years on Yosemite 10.0. I did not allow OSX to auto update from Yosemite and ran Adobe apps fine until computer crashed in 2023

once activated, apps no longer able to be activated, will continue to work.  ie, don't make any hardware changes to old computers with activated cs2,3 or 4.

I'd recommend getting the newer versions of the software - you're missing out on TONS of useful features using software that old.

That being said, this thread had some useful suggestions Trying to install CS3 on OS X Yosemite with discs, installation stops abruptly. [was: Is there hope?]
