I am trying to install Lightroom 6 upgrade from my Lightroom 5.7.1 on my PC desktop computer

I am trying to install Lightroom 6 (stand alone not creative cloud) upgrade from my lightroom 5.7.1 on my PC desktop computer. It isn't working. I've done the download a couple of times and it doesn't seem to go through. Somewhere I'm supposed to put in the serial number of the Lr 5.7.1, but I'm not sure where. I have clicked on what appears to be logical next steps. But nothing has happened. I purchased to new lightroom today and would really like to start using it. Can you help me?

Exactly what doesn't go through? Describe in detail exactly what steps have been performed and then what happens, including any error messages.
