I am trying to tell adobe about my legal copy of Indesign CS2, but am told that the serial number is already active. I know I did that back then, but the computer died and the hard drive is GONE. Under the license I could put it on my laptop and keep a copy on my home PC as long as I didn't use them both at the same time. Neither of those computers exists anymore. And why can't adobe tell that it was me who did the first activation?

It will not matter because your copy of CS2 and the serial number will no longer work. You need to acquire a special version due to Adobe shutting down the activation server for CS2 and other products of that timeframe.
