I cannot activate. Acrobat doesn't connect to internet at work and Adobe's phone numbers are disconnected

I bought Acrobat and when I finished installing it, it couldn't seem to connect to the internet to activate properly.  I contacted my IT person at work and he showed no issues with the firewall (which we took down for the install) or our network.

I also tried to use the phone activation route, but the 2 numbers the software provides are either disconnected or just wrong.  I thought they might be outdated, so I verified on the Adobe site.  1-866-772-3623 does NOT work when you dial it.  I've tried multiple times a day for over a week.  The other number (1-206-675-6222) isn't even a working number.  What am I supposed to do?

I have the Serial Number and the Activation Number and the Activation Type.  But I can't activate the software without the Authorization Code.  Can anyone help me with this realizing that I've done everything correct up until this point?  Is there a more current phone number to try and reach Adobe's phone activation help line?

Correct answer kglad

unless that's acrobat 7 or older, check your hosts file.

for help with that and other common problems, Sign in, activation, or connection errors | CS5.5 and later, Acrobat DC

if you have an old version, that activation servers are closed.  is that (v. 7) the problem?

It's Acrobat 8.  What's a "hosts file"?
