I'm having trouble with my brush tool

I'm trying to use my brush tool in my layers but I keep getting an error message stating that it is not corresponding to the layer not available.  I tried resetting my tool

and checked in my history to make sure it was checked still nothing.  Can some please help me I desperately need my brush tool?
